Don't Wait for a Crisis: Review Your Medicare Options Annually

Medicare plans can change each year, and so can your health needs. Taking a proactive approach to review your coverage annually can save you money, ensure access to needed care, and provide peace of mind.

Navigating Medicare can feel complex, but one simple habit can make a significant difference in your healthcare journey: reviewing your Medicare options every year. Many people enroll in a plan and then forget about it, only to find themselves surprised by changes in coverage or costs later on. The annual Medicare Open Enrollment Period, from October 15 to December 7, is your dedicated time to make informed choices for the upcoming year.

Why Annual Review Matters

Think of your Medicare plan like an annual check-up for your car. Even if it's running fine, regular maintenance helps prevent future problems. Similarly, your Medicare plan, whether it's Original Medicare with supplemental coverage or a Medicare Advantage plan, isn't static. Insurance companies can change their offerings, including premiums, deductibles, copayments, and most critically, their network of doctors, hospitals, and pharmacies. The list of covered medications (the formulary) can also shift.

Your own health needs also evolve. A medication you started taking this year might not be on your plan's preferred list next year, leading to higher out-of-pocket costs. A new diagnosis might mean you need access to specialists not covered by your current plan. Waiting for a health crisis to discover these gaps can add unnecessary stress and financial burden.

What to Look For During Your Review

When you sit down to review your options, here are the key areas to focus on:

  • Costs: Compare premiums, deductibles, copayments, and out-of-pocket maximums. Even small changes can add up over a year.
  • Drug Coverage (Part D): Check if all your current prescriptions are still covered, and what tier they fall into. Pay attention to any changes in preferred pharmacies that might affect your copays.
  • Doctor and Hospital Networks: If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, confirm that your preferred doctors, specialists, and hospitals are still in network. For Original Medicare, ensure your supplemental plan (Medigap) continues to meet your needs.
  • Additional Benefits: Medicare Advantage plans often offer extra benefits like vision, dental, hearing, or fitness programs. See if your plan's offerings still align with your priorities, or if another plan offers something more beneficial to you.

How to Approach Your Annual Check-Up

Beginning in early October, you should receive an Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) from your current plan. This document details all the changes coming in the new year. Do not discard this! It is your essential starting point.

Next, use official Medicare resources. The Medicare Plan Finder tool on Medicare.gov is an invaluable, free resource. It allows you to enter your current medications, preferred pharmacies, and even your doctors to compare plans available in your area side-by-side. You can also call 1-800-MEDICARE for personalized assistance.

Consider reaching out to State Health Insurance Assistance Programs (SHIPs), which offer free, unbiased counseling to Medicare beneficiaries. These programs are federally funded and state-administered, providing expert local guidance without sales pressure.

Making an informed decision during Open Enrollment isn't about finding the 'perfect' plan; it's about finding the right plan for you and your unique circumstances for the coming year. This annual habit empowers you to take control of your healthcare and ensures your coverage aligns with your current health needs and budget, offering valuable peace of mind.
